Ticket to Ride scoring: route points, tickets and the longest path
June 14, 2026 · 4 min read
Quick answer
In Ticket to Ride you score points immediately when you claim routes — from 1 point for a 1-car route up to 15 for a 6-car route — then add completed destination tickets and subtract failed ones at the end. The longest continuous path earns a 10-point bonus.
How many points are routes worth in Ticket to Ride?
You score route points the moment you claim a route by playing train cards, and you mark them on the score track around the board. Longer routes are disproportionately more valuable:
- 1 car — 1 point
- 2 cars — 2 points
- 3 cars — 4 points
- 4 cars — 7 points
- 5 cars — 10 points
- 6 cars — 15 points
How do destination tickets score at the end?
When any player has 2 or fewer trains left at the end of their turn, everyone — including that player — gets one final turn. Then tickets are revealed: each completed destination ticket adds its printed value, and each failed one subtracts it. This is where comfortable leads evaporate.
Finally, the Longest Continuous Path bonus is worth 10 points to the player with the longest unbroken chain of their own trains. If several players tie, they all score it.
Common scoring mistakes in Ticket to Ride
- Forgetting to move the score marker when claiming a route — if anyone doubts the track at the end, recount route by route.
- Scoring a failed destination ticket as zero — uncompleted tickets subtract their full value.
- Measuring the longest path in routes instead of plastic trains, or counting a branch twice — it must be one continuous chain.
- Ending the game a round too early — the player who triggers the end also gets one last turn.

Frequently asked questions
Do you lose points for incomplete destination tickets?
Yes. At the end of the game every uncompleted destination ticket subtracts its full printed value from your score, exactly as a completed one would have added it.
How much is the longest path worth in Ticket to Ride?
10 points, awarded to the player with the longest continuous chain of their own trains. Loops are allowed, but no route can be counted twice, and tied players all receive the bonus.
When does Ticket to Ride end?
When a player has 2 or fewer trains left at the end of their turn, every player — including that one — takes one final turn. Then destination tickets and the longest path bonus are scored.
