Scrabble scoring: letter values, premium squares and the 50-point bingo

How do letter and premium squares score?
Each tile shows its point value in the corner (blanks are always worth 0). A word scores the sum of its tiles, but the coloured premium squares change the maths — and only the turn a tile is first placed on them:
- Double / Triple Letter — multiply that single tile’s value by 2 or 3
- Double / Triple Word — multiply the whole word’s total by 2 or 3
- A premium already covered on an earlier turn scores as a plain square from then on
Apply letter premiums first, then the word premium to the adjusted total. If one word covers two word-premium squares, the multipliers stack: two double-word squares make ×4, two triple-word squares ×9.
When a single tile creates more than one word (playing across an existing word), each new word is scored separately, and a premium square under the shared tile counts for every word it helps form.
The 50-point bingo and the end of the game
Using all seven tiles from your rack in a single turn earns a 50-point bonus — the “bingo” — added on top of the word score. It is the single biggest swing in the game, which is why good players hoard tiles to set one up.
The game ends when the bag is empty and one player uses the last of their tiles, or after too many consecutive scoreless turns. Then each player subtracts the total value of the tiles still on their rack. If someone went out first, the sum of everyone else’s leftover tiles is added to that player’s score instead.
Common scoring mistakes in Scrabble
- Re-scoring a premium square that was covered on an earlier turn — premiums only count the turn a tile first lands on them.
- Applying the word multiplier before the letter multiplier — score the letter premiums first, then multiply the whole word.
- Forgetting the 50-point bingo for playing all seven tiles at once.
- Scoring a blank tile as the letter it stands for — a blank is always worth 0, even on a letter-premium square.
- Skipping the end-game rack adjustment — unplayed tiles are subtracted, and are handed to whoever emptied their rack.
